Why Save your Own Seeds?
Knowing how to save your own seeds is an essential skill to have from a self sufficiency stand point. If one day those online shops/ home improvement store no longer carried your favorite seed varieties then having a packet of seeds from your own plants will ensure that you can continue growing that variety for years to come.
Another reason to save your own seeds is to share. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, homesteading is just as much about community as it is about self reliance. There are so many online seed exchanges one can participate in to spread the love and benefits of gardening your own food. Even if you just wanted to gift your seeds to a family member or friend, these printable seed packets are the perfect way to gift the gift that keeps on giving.
Seed Saving Tips
I am not a seasoned seed saver but I have collected a fair few. Start with some of the easier vegetables to collected seeds from, those would include:
- peas
- beans
- lettuce
- broccoli
- tomatoes
- peppers
- basil
- cilantro
Again I will go in depth on seed saving at a later time but know that some vegetable seeds can be collected from the fruit (tomato or pepper). Some seeds can be collected from within a seed pod (peas and beans). For some seeds you will have to allow the plant to mature to when it “bolts” or “goes to seed” (lettuce, basil, cilantro). Going to seed or bolting is simply waiting for the plant to produce tall flowering stalks from which you can collect new seeds.
Make sure that seeds are fully dried out before storing in seed saving envelopes.

These printable seed packets will look best and last longer if printed on heavier card stock paper. I used 110 lb. weighted card stock which was slightly too heavy. I would recommend 80-90 lb.
Supplies needed:
- Scissors
- Double sided tape/ glue stick
- 90 lb card stock in color of your choice
